Get Ready for Spring Break!
Ahhh, spring break! Nothing conjures up more glorious images of fun in the sun - especially after a cold, dreary winter. Unfortunately, the rush of getting prepared for a vacation can leave you too tired or frazzled to enjoy the first few days away.
Use this checklist to make sure you have all your bases covered, so you can relax before and during your trip.
Traveling by Air
- If you don't have your tickets yet, you may be able to pick up last-minute deals on your favorite airline's website.
- Know your airline's policy for carry-on and checked bags, so you pack accordingly.
- Check in online to save yourself time at the airport (be sure to print your boarding pass so you can get through security).
- Have your passport or other identification handy for security screening.
- Make your rental car reservation as early as possible for the best deal.
Traveling by Car
- Check fluid levels, tire pressure (your spare too!) and consider replacing your air filter for better gas mileage.
- Collect all necessary directions and maps. Check AAA.com for a TripTik® you can print yourself.
- Toss a roll of SCOTT® Towels in the back seat for unexpected messes.
Packing
- Check the weather for your stay. You can get a 10-day forecast on Weather.com
- Write out a packing list, making sure to note items you might not need at home this time of year: sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, sandals, swim gear and a beach cover-up.
- Remember the 3-1-1: If you're flying and plan on using carry-on bags, TSA requires that all liquids and gels be in containers of 3 ounces or less; packed in a clear, one-quart bag; one bag to a passenger.
At the home front
- Stop the newspaper.
- Stop the mail. The U.S. Postal Service allows you to do it online.
- Let a couple of neighbors/your Block Watch captain know you'll be gone so they can be alert for suspicious activity.
- Line up someone to shovel in case there's a spring snowstorm.
- Ask someone to feed the cat and water the plants.
- Make reservation for the dog at the kennel.
For you
- Give yourself a pedicure if you'll be wearing sandals. When you get to your destination, walking barefoot in sand can help keep your skin exfoliated.
- Don't go to a tanning booth. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, any type of tanning attacks the skin's DNA, producing genetic defects that may cause cancer. Instead, opt for a tanning lotion for some color and apply high-SPF sunscreen when you get there.
